AIRSHOW BEAUVECHAIN 5/6 September 1992 Central theme of the 1992 Beauvechain Airshow (only one week later the BAF organized a second airshow at Florennes!) was the 50th anniversary of its no. 349 “Strike hard, Strike home” squadron. Both Hans and Frank were among the spectators.
Nice formation-flying was carried out by resident Fouga Magisters and Alphajets during the pre-show day of the Belgian Air Force’s Air Meeting at Brustem-St.Truiden in September 1989. The national demoteams of Spain (La Patrulla Aguila) and Portugal (Asas de Portugal) were also present to show their abilities and not to forget that good old Avro Shackleton , which was part of a RAF-delegation. Both Hans and Frank went there and enjoyed the show.
In 1988 Hans and Frank were in Switzerland to watch the “Flugmeisterschaften” (Air Championships) of the Swiss Air Force. The event was held at Dübendorf AB, where an airshow was attached to it on 27 August. This gallery shows you some of the military a/c participating.
On July 3rd , 1987 , one day before the actual Open Day at Twenthe AB (NL) took place , many aircraft-spotters and other enthusiasts already found their way to this air base . They all came to watch and to make pictures of the aircraft that were arriving for the Static Show on the next day. The Royal Air Force-component was most extensive with 1 Hunter , 1 Hawk , 1 Harrier , 1 Bucccaneer , 2 Phantoms , 2 Jaguars , 1 Puma and 1 Wessex participating ! Hans also joined the party and took a number of pictures , of which a selection is shown in this gallery.
During the fifties and sixties Chièvres Air Base in the south of Belgium was in active use by the Belgian Air Force , but later on it gradually became an air-transport facility for V.I.P’s who are visiting SHAPE (the NATO-HQ in Brussels). Sometimes Open Days & Air Shows took place at this location , such as the one on June 20th ,1987 , which was attended by Hans. The presence of two USAF B-52’s (one at the Static Show and one demo-aircraft in the air) was without any doubt impressive !
The Open Days at Eindhoven AB in September 1986 were quite representative for those days with various NATO aircraft arriving on the 19th and an Air Show on the 20th. Excellent weather conditions marked the event and this gallery , which – as usual- only presents a selective overview of the proceedings , contains a photo-review made by Hans.
During their European Tour in 1984 the U.S.Air Force’s Flight Demonstration Team The Thunderbirds with their F-16’s also visited Soesterberg Air Base in the Netherlands on June 12th. The public had free access to the Base for the duration of the show and many thousands of people watched and admired the team’s flying skills. Hans was one of the spectators and took the pictures in this gallery , although three of the slides used were acquired via swopping with one of his correspondents at the time.
The 70th Anniversary of the R.Netherlands AF was celebrated at Deelen AB on June 11th , 1983. Highlight of this event , however , was the impressive formation- Fly-Past of 18 Dutch Starfighters followed by a Base-Attack by a number of others, which marked the end of an era : after 20 years of operational service this type of aircraft was to be phased out the same year.
On September 11th , 1981 , the day before the actual Open Day at Soesterberg AB took place , the public had already (limited) access to the field . Due to heavy overcast and frequent rainshowers there wasn’t much demo-flying activity , but the Static Show on the ground was satisfactory , including amongst others an F-5E Tiger II of the American “Agressors”-squadron , based at Alconbury , U.K. Hans likes to show you some scans of the colour-slides he took on the 11th.
