An airworthy aircraft that has the looks of being a military machine but that is in fact a civil bird is called a Warbird. It is always a pleasure to witness old Harvards, Pipers and so on , as if they have never been discharged. These reports -not only of exclusive “warbird”-shows but also of airshows during which “warbirds” happened to be present- show that old airplanes never die…
Here’s an impression of the 2012 Warbirds Fly-In/Photoflying Days at Zoersel/Malle Airfield in Belgium. The photos were taken on August 17.
The May 2012 MCAS Cherrypoint Air Show featured -next to many modern aircraft- a lot of warbirds: airworthy civilian aircraft that are painted to represent military planes from the past. A few highlights: the West Texas Wing of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) presented the world’s only flying example of the SB2C Helldiver. Also from the CAF was the P-51C Mustang of the Tuskegee Red Tail Squadron: the all African American 332d Fighter Group.
Belgium celebrated the 65th anniversary of its air force with an impressive airshow at Koksijde Air Base on 6 and 7 July 2011. The show also featured lot of warbirds that are presented in this gallery. Frank visited the show on Thursday 7 July.
The Fly-In at Lelystad AP in 2009 , organized by the Aviodrome Museum , attracted some interesting Warbirds : the FW-190 in World War II-Luftwaffe colours was of course most significant in its presence ! These pictures were taken by Hans.
Some pictures of Warbirds that were present during the Open Day at Beauvechain in 1999 (all photos Copyright Frank Klaassen).
This airfield in Belgium certainly is an eldorado for Warbirds-fans and 1996 was a year in which a great air show was organized there , not in the least because some former air force jets took part ! Especially interesting to watch were examples of the F-86 Sabre and the MIG 15 , once real opponents during the Korean War. Hans and Frank enjoyed their performance very much.
Hans and Frank went to Belgium in September 1993 to attend the traditional Warbirds Air Show that took place at Oostmalle Airfield.
In this gallery you will see some “warbird”-pictures taken by Hans and Frank during the 1992 Florennes Airshow.
A few pictures of Warbirds that took part in the Air Show at Naval Air Station Valkenburg (NL) in June1990. Hans was present and watched the starting-up of the B-25 Mitchell of the Duke of Brabant Air Force from close-by.
