In July 1987 Hans travelled to RAF Fairford , U.K. by car and ferry-boat.
For the first time Hans visited Leeuwarden AB (NL) as an aircraft-spotter in August 1967. In later years he was present there again , mainly during squadron-exchanges and to photograph arriving aircraft for Open Days held there. Needless to say it never was easy to picture aircraft in their landing-pattern and otherwise !
Just recently , on April 4th , 2017 , Hans went to Leeuwarden to spend an afternoon “aircraft-spotting“,while the NATO exercise “Frisian Flag“ was taking place. The spotting-facilities were good and the weather was nice. For photography he used his old Asahi Pentax camera with 135 mm. telelens . So the selection of scans you will see in this gallery were made of original colour slides !
Having received an invitation from the Base Commander and the C.O. 32nd Tactical Fighter Group , Hans went to Soesterberg Air Base , where an aircraft spotters gathering was organized on June 6th, 1990.
Different types of NATO-maritime patrol aircraft belonging to several naval air arms were present and on static during the Open Day , that was held at the Dutch Naval Air Station Valkenburg on June 1st , 1990. Especially the Royal Navy was well represented by a Jetstream and two Westland Gazelles of the Pusser’s Pair , which gave a nice air-demonstration. Hans took some pictures and this gallery shows you an impression.
On the premises of the huge Pensacola Naval Air Station (home of a.o. the demonstration team of the US Navy – the Bue Angels) is the NNAM, a museum that deals with the aviation legacy of both the US Navy, USMarines and Coast Guard.
The Air Force Armament Museum in Florida exhibits aviation warfare armament (bombs, rockets, missiles), as well as the platforms that are being used to fire resp. drop them. In this report we of course focus on the latter: on the aircraft that the museum displays.
Frank only incidentally visited Soesterberg AB , but Hans frequented the former Air Base quite often because he moved to the province of Utrecht (where Soesterberg is located) at the end of the Sixties , after having made his living in Eindhoven . So he (also) became a Soesterberg AB “home” spotter and he already has published a lot of his Soesterberg pictures elsewhere on the web. The picture-gallery on our website shows a limited selection of pictures not only of the aircraft of the resident American “Royal” squadron , The Wolfhounds , but also of various other planes that were stationed at Soesterberg AB or only paid a visit over the years. They were all taken from outside the base.
In 1988 two Air Shows took place in the Netherlands : one at Deelen Air Base on July 1st , celebrating 75 years of Dutch military aviation and one off-shore at Scheveningen Beach on June 4th. Highlight of the Deelen Air Show was the first performance in the Netherlands of the Swiss demoteam La Patrouille de Suisse , at the time still equipped with Hawker Hunters.
