This gallery features pictures of aircraft that have been disposed of or preserved in one way or another; the airframes depicted here (gate-guards, monuments, eye-catchers, etc.) are photographed in the years 2011 onward. Note that some of the aircraft portrayed here are no longer present at the given location.
W&R portrayed in the USA are dealt with in a separate gallery (also in this album “Preserved Aircraft”).
On 29 and 30 May 2015 an airshow was organized at Solenzara. Ventiseri/Solenzara is an airbase of the Armee de l’Air (French Air Force), situated on the island of Corsica. The airshow featured a number of interesting warbirds, as depicted here:
As a rule, all pictures on this website were made by Hans Engels or Frank Klaassen (the webmasters of Thunderstreaks.com).
Yet, in the course of time we have collected a considerable number of slides and negatives that have been made by other collegue spotters/photographers. As a rule these slides/negatives have come to us through a network of foreign correspondents with whom we used to swop photographic material. Since we would like to share this material as well, we created this specific gallery.
Fréjus-St. Raphael was a base of the Aéronavale (French Naval Air Arm); the base is closed now and turned into a recreational facility. Frank visited the June 1979 Open Day there.
On 19 September 1971 a memorable Open Day took place at Base Aérienne de Cambrai in Northern France and both Hans and Frank went there. Many aircraft of the resident squadrons including Super Mystères of the 12th Escadre de Chasse (FAF) , Fouga Magisters , T-33s ,a Flamant and a Mirage 4 were nicely lined up in front of the public. Also a Broussard of the 12th , a visiting Vautour and a Mirage 3C were on static. The 10th Escadre de Chasse was represented by a Super Mystère and a Magister. The air show comprised several Super Mystères , Fouga Magisters , T-33s , a Mirage 4 and a Noratlas.
