This gallery features pictures of aircraft that have been disposed of or preserved in one way or another; the airframes depicted here (gate-guards, monuments, eye-catchers, etc.) are photographed in the years 2011 onward. Note that some of the aircraft portrayed here are no longer present at the given location.
W&R portrayed in the USA are dealt with in a separate gallery (also in this album “Preserved Aircraft”).
On July 23rd , 1983 Scramble Tours organized a one day return trip to what is known as the biggest Air Show event in Europe : the International Air Tattoo at RAF Greenham Common , U.K.
Hans joined the travel-group and took to the air in NLM City Hopper’s Fokker F-28 Fellowship PH-CHN for a flight from Amsterdam AP (Schiphol) to Southampton , U.K. and onwards by touring car to destination.
As a rule, all pictures on this website were made by Hans Engels or Frank Klaassen (the webmasters of Thunderstreaks.com).
Yet, in the course of time we have collected a considerable number of slides and negatives that have been made by other collegue spotters/photographers. As a rule these slides/negatives have come to us through a network of foreign correspondents with whom we used to swop photographic material. Since we would like to share this material as well, we created this specific gallery.
The 1978 Tiger Meet was held at Kleine Brogel AB (Belgium) from 19-26 June. Participating were the air arms of 10 different countries including Norway, Greece and Portugal. On 23 June KB was open to the public and on Saturday 24 June the 31 squadron ‘Tiger’ area was open to the public. Both Frank and Hans visited the event.
Frank only incidentally visited Soesterberg AB , but Hans frequented the former Air Base quite often because he moved to the province of Utrecht (where Soesterberg is located) at the end of the Sixties , after having made his living in Eindhoven . So he (also) became a Soesterberg AB “home” spotter and he already has published a lot of his Soesterberg pictures elsewhere on the web. The picture-gallery on our website shows a limited selection of pictures not only of the aircraft of the resident American “Royal” squadron , The Wolfhounds , but also of various other planes that were stationed at Soesterberg AB or only paid a visit over the years. They were all taken from outside the base.
On a very hot day in June 1969 the Wildenrath Airshow took place; Wildenrath was at the time one of the four RAF-Germany airbases. It was an excellent opportunity for young spotters, such as Hans and Frank , to enlarge their collection!
The Royal Netherlands Air Force celebrated 100 years of military aviation in the Netherlands & 60 years of K.Lu. with two Open Days, 14&15 June; this event was featuring a lot of warbirds and a fair number of them are depicted in this report.
The first lot of the pictures in this gallery are made Thursday, June 12th 2013.
This was the day prior to the Open Days of the KLu; Frank and Hans went to Volkel in an attempt to catch some of the arrivals for the airshow. The Open Day of 13 June is reported in a separate gallery.
The rest of this gallery presents some older spotter photos made by Frank or Hans.
During the Sixties Volkel (NL) was an airbase where photography was not easy; nevertheless the authors managed to take some pictures during that period.Nowadays there are more facilities to do so. This gallery contains a selection of the images we took at Volkel – mainly standing near the landinglights waiting for the based Starfighters to come in.
Pictures of aircraft that have been disposed of or preserved in one way or another ; this gallery deals with airframes photographed in the years 1960-2009. No need to say that the majority of the airframes presented here are no longer present.
