It was raining and pouring when a group of Dutch aircraft-spotters (Hans was one of them) arrived at Wiesbaden Air Base , Germany on May 18th , 1969. The group was coming from Frankfurt-Rhein. Main AB (see other picture gallery) and intended to be present during an Armed Forces Day at this air transport and communications facility., organized by USAFE.
After having visited the Armed Forces Day at Rhein-Main Air Base , Germany on May 17th , 1969 (see elsewhere on the site) , Hans (and friends) left the base in the late afternoon to spend a little while aircraft-spotting “outside the gates and fences“.
Each year in August the Aviodrome Museum at Lelystad AP (NL) organizes a fly-in for Warbird and Oldtimer aircraft.
On July 5th , 1968 Hans went to Royal Air Force Station Wildenrath , a few miles across the Dutch-German border . He positioned himself near the landing-approach lights and awaited the aircraft and helicopters that were to arrive to attend the two Open Days that were planned there on the next two days.
In September 1988 it was 35 years ago that 306“reconnaissance“squadron of the K.Lu. came into operation.
In July 1987 Hans boarded the ferry-boat from Hook of Holland to Harwich with his car and after arrival in the U.K.he travelled to RAF Fairford.
For the first time Hans visited Leeuwarden AB (NL) as an aircraft-spotter in August 1967. In later years he came back several times. Needless to say it never was easy to picture aircraft in their landing-pattern and at other locations outside the fences !
Also in the case of announced squadron-rotations it was not certain beforehand if there would be any flying-activities on the day he chose to be present .
