For a long time Rhein-Main AB near Frankfurt, Germany acted as the main USAFE operating base for air transport duties on the European Continent , until the base was closed in 2005 and Ramstein AB took over this task. Many deployments from the U.S. took place with Rhein-Main as destination over the years.
On June 24th / 25th , 1967 the annual International Air Show in Belgium took place at Melsbroek near Brussels, the home of the air transport fleet of the Belgian Air Force. Hans’ pictures in this gallery were still made with a relatively simple camera and no tele-lens could be used as yet…
On August 20th another Warbirds-Fly-In took place , namely at Lelystad AP , organized by the Aviodrome Museum and Hans went to this enjoyable event. Especially the “real” Army Camps in World War II-style set up by volunteers attracted much attention as well as the musical shows from that era. Some interesting Warbirds did arrive of which the Lockheed P-38 Lightning certainly was the high-light!
In 1985 it was 50 years ago that the famous Douglas DC-3 Dakota took to the air for the first time. Opportunity for a Golden DC-3 Jubilee-celebration , organized at Eindhoven Airport and bringing together five airworthy Douglas DC-3’s : some in civilian, others in warbirds livery . In this gallery Hans shows you some pictures he made on July 6th.
In 1985 it was forty years ago that World War II ended and therefore a special Liberation Airshow was organized at Rotterdam-Zestienhoven Airport on May 5th . Lots of Warbirds and historic aircraft were present and this gallery shows a selection of pictures, taken by Hans.
Two K.Lu. Open Days took place in 1967 : one was organized at Eindhoven AB in September and the other one at Soesterberg AB in June. This gallery shows you some black & white pictures taken at Soesterberg by Hans. The Hawker Hunters of nr.325 squadron were still going strong at the time!
On September 9th , 1966 a Family Day and small Air Show took place at Eindhoven AB ; Hans was present by invitation and – although photography was not allowed officially – managed to take some interesting photos.
The 1965 (June 27th) Airshow at Brustem-St.Truiden AB, Belgium was the very first aviation-event attended by Hans (except for the Open Day at Eindhoven AB in 1963, of which he has no pictures available). The photos in this gallery are of very poor quality , taken as they were with very simple camera-equipment, but nevertheless worth while showing. They give you a sense of long ago…!
The flying-programme during the Open Days at Leeuwarden Air Base (NL) in June 2006 featured the U.S.Navy’s Flight Demonstration Team The Blue Angels. Never before they visited the Netherlands so this was their first time and for Dutch aircraft spotters it was an excellent opportunity to see their F-18 Hornets and one Hercules in action !
