In September 2017 Frank visited the “Flugwerft” in Oberschleissheim: an aviation museum, subsidiary of the famous Deutsches Museum (German Museum).
Oberschleissheim is a few miles north of Munich. Till 1968 Schleisheim Army Air Base was home to a Sikorski H-34 equipped USArmy helicopter training unit. Military usage was continued with the German Heeresflieger (Heeresfliegerstaffel 8 with Alouette II); the German Army in its turn left the airfield in 1981 and since then it’s a quiet airstrip where not much is going on.
Since 1992 Schleisheim houses the Flugwerft, the part of the Deutsches Museum that displays (a.o.) the masterpieces of German aviation such as one of the first operational WW2 jet fighter aircraft, the Messerschmitt Me-262, VTOL test-aircraft (like the supersonic fighter VJ 101 C, one of the first V/STOL aircraft able to fly at MACH-2 speed and designed to replace the Starfighters of the Luftwaffe), the experimental Boeing/EADS X-31 fighter and much more!
