The Royal Netherlands Air Force celebrated 100 years of military aviation in the Netherlands & 60 years of K.Lu. with two Open Days, 14&15 June; this event was featuring a lot of warbirds and a fair number of them are depicted in this report.
During the Sixties Volkel (NL) was an airbase where photography was not easy; nevertheless the authors (Hans and Frank) managed to take some pictures during that period . Later on facilities to do so grew easier. This gallery contains a selection of the images we took at Volkel – mainly standing near the landing-lights waiting for the aircraft to come in.
Some pictures , made by Frank on Thursday , June 12th , 2013, are added to this gallery
This was the day prior to the Open Days of the KLu; Frank and Hans went to Volkel in an attempt to catch some of the arrivals for the airshow. The Open Day of 13 June is reported in a separate gallery.
At the Florennes Airshow (Belgium) on 21 June 1975, a couple of warbirds showed up as well: the Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane of the Battle-of-Britain Memorial Flight. There was also a Boeing B-17 present carrying a French civil registration. This aircraft became a “real” warbird in later years , painted in USAAF-colours. Hans and Frank were among the spectators.
The 1971 Belgian International Vliegmeeting took place at Brustem-St.Truiden AB on 19 and 20 June ; the weather could have been better on the 19th (many rainshowers!). H&F got special permission to take some pictures in the flight-line area; have a special look at the photos of the two members (Steve Nuyts & Palmer de Vlieger) of one of the most spectacular demoteams ever: The Slivers !
Here’s an impression of the 2012 Warbirds Fly-In/Photoflying Days at Zoersel/Malle Airfield in Belgium. The photos were taken on August 17.
The May 2012 MCAS Cherrypoint Air Show featured -next to many modern aircraft- a lot of warbirds: airworthy civilian aircraft that are painted to represent military planes from the past. A few highlights: the West Texas Wing of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) presented the world’s only flying example of the SB2C Helldiver. Also from the CAF was the P-51C Mustang of the Tuskegee Red Tail Squadron: the all African American 332d Fighter Group.
Belgium celebrated the 65th anniversary of its air force with an impressive airshow at Koksijde Air Base on 6 and 7 July 2011. The show also featured lot of warbirds that are presented in this gallery. Frank visited the show on Thursday 7 July.

This airfield in Belgium certainly is an eldorado for Warbirds-fans and 1996 was a year in which a great air show was organized there , not in the least because some former air force jets took part ! Especially interesting to watch were examples of the F-86 Sabre and the MIG 15 , once real opponents during the Korean War. Hans and Frank enjoyed their performance very much.
Hans and Frank went to Belgium in September 1993 to attend the traditional Warbirds Air Show that took place at Oostmalle Airfield.
