In June 1969 we all three visited the Internationale Vliegmeeting at Bierset AB, Belgium, home of the 42nd recce squadron; the open days & air show took place on two days , namely 20 and 21 June 1969 and among the many interesting aircraft to be seen there was a significant U.S.Navy delegation.
The 1978 Tiger Meet was held at Kleine Brogel AB (Belgium) from 19-26 June. Participating were the air arms of 10 different countries including Norway, Greece and Portugal. On 23 June KB was open to the public and on Saturday 24 June the 31 squadron ‘Tiger’ area was open to the public. We all three visited the event.
In 1978 both the Advanced- and Transition Flying School of the Belgian Air Force were based at the airbase of Brustem/Sint Truiden; this base is now closed by the way. The AFS was equipped with the Potez-Fouga CM-170 Magister, the TFS with Lockheed T-33As. Both types were replaced by the Alpha Jet in the early eighties and the location for the flying training was moved to France.
In the old days NATO organized several exercises; TWM (Tactical Weapons Meet) was a competition between 2ATAF and 4ATAF (Allied Tactical Air Force). In 1972 it was held for the 10th time and participants at Florennes in Belgium were Canadian AF Starfighters (Judge Team), Belgian AF Starfighters) (2nd Wing , Florennes), French AF Mirages (Guest Team, Esc.11/3, Nancy-Ochey) ,W.German AF Starfighters (JBG31, Nörvenich and JBG33, Büchel), R.Neth.AF(311/312 sq., Volkel, Starfighters), Royal Air Force Germany (14/17/31 sq.,Brüggen with Phantoms) and USAF in Europe ( 36TFW, Bitburg and 81TFW, Bentwaters, Phantoms).
On 16 September 2012 the Sanicole aeroclub, based at Hechtel airfield in Belgium, had its 36th airshow. The Sanicole show is one of the largest privatly organized air events; stars of the day were a Barksdale B-52 bomber and two interesting Swedish warbirds, a Tunnan and a Viggen.
