For the first time Hans visited Leeuwarden AB (NL) as an aircraft-spotter in August 1967. In later years he came back several times. Needless to say it never was easy to picture aircraft in their landing-pattern and at other locations outside the fences !
Also in the case of announced squadron-rotations it was not certain beforehand if there would be any flying-activities on the day he chose to be present .
A squadron rotation took place at Leeuwarden AB in June 1973 between 323 sq. R.Neth.AF and nr.29 sq. RAF from Wattisham , equipped with Lightnings ; Frank visited this event on 19 June.
In May 1973 322 squadron , K.Lu. had a rotation (exchange-exercise) with 724 Esk of the Royal Danish AF, equipped with Hawker Hunters; there were 4 Hunters visiting Leeuwarden AB and Frank was there to take some pictures.
In May 1973 Leeuwarden AB was visited by 4 AJ-37 Viggens of the Swedish Air Force (plus a support Hercules); the aircraft were on their way to the Paris-Le Bourget airshow and stayed for an overnight stop. On the 22nd Frank was authorized to take some pictures of the aircraft.
A poor open day, mainly due to the very bad weather (as you can see on the photos made by Frank). After the presentation of 4 NF-5s, a Starfighter, a Troopship and a Magister of the Belgian Red Devils the further show had to be cancelled because of the strong wind. The static was okay though, featuring amongst others a Danish F-100F and RF-35 Draken.
In 1969 the KLu held two small Open Days : one at Leeuwarden AB and the other at Gilze Rijen AB ; both air bases were open to the public on Friday and Saturday ; these are the pictures of the Leeuwarden Open Day of Friday August 15th , made by Hans.
