In 1978 both the Advanced- and Transition Flying School of the Belgian Air Force were based at the airbase of Brustem/Sint Truiden; this base is now closed by the way. The AFS was equipped with the Potez-Fouga CM-170 Magister, the TFS with Lockheed T-33As. Both types were replaced by the Alpha Jet in the early eighties and the location for the flying training was moved to France.
On 19 September 1971 a memorable Open Day took place at Base Aérienne de Cambrai in Northern France and both Hans and Frank went there. Many aircraft of the resident squadrons including Super Mystères of the 12th Escadre de Chasse (FAF) , Fouga Magisters , T-33s ,a Flamant and a Mirage 4 were nicely lined up in front of the public. Also a Broussard of the 12th , a visiting Vautour and a Mirage 3C were on static. The 10th Escadre de Chasse was represented by a Super Mystère and a Magister.The air show comprised several Super Mystères , Fouga Magisters , T-33s , a Mirage 4 and a Noratlas.
In the old days NATO organized several exercises; TWM (Tactical Weapons Meet) was a competition between 2ATAF and 4ATAF (Allied Tactical Air Force). In 1972 it was held for the 10th time and participants at Florennes in Belgium were Canadian AF Starfighters (Judge Team), Belgian AF Starfighters) (2nd Wing , Florennes), French AF Mirages (Guest Team, Esc.11/3, Nancy-Ochey) ,W.German AF Starfighters (JBG31, Nörvenich and JBG33, Büchel), R.Neth.AF(311/312 sq., Volkel, Starfighters), Royal Air Force Germany (14/17/31 sq.,Brüggen with Phantoms) and USAF in Europe ( 36TFW, Bitburg and 81TFW, Bentwaters, Phantoms).
The Musee Aeronautique Ailes Anciennes is in the French city of Toulouse and has over 50 aircraft on display. The planes vary in the shape they are: some are fully restored and painted in original colours, while others seem to have been standing in the outside for over 50 years. Frank visited the “Ancient Wings” Museum early september 2013.
The Smithsonian Institution is a group of museums (located mainly in Washington DC) that covers areas such as art, natural history, biology, etc.
Pictures of aircraft that have been disposed of or preserved in one way or another ; this gallery deals with airframes photographed in the years 1960-2009. No need to say that the majority of the airframes presented here are no longer present.
On June 11th and 12th , 1971 a number of (Dutch) aircraft spotters (Hans was one of them) travelled to Ramstein Air Base in Germany to attend the USAFE Armed Forces Day , which also marked the end of the NATO Royal Flush Reconnaissance Meet that was organized there during the weeks before.
